The Community
The Kingdom of Bahrain is a small but important group of islands in the Arabian Gulf. Its importance stems from its position as not only the gateway to the oil-rich eastern province of Saudi Arabia, but also to its role as a banking and manufacturing center. The population of approximately 700,000 is one of the most cosmopolitan in the Middle East.
The School
The Modern Knowledge Schools, founded by Ms. Parween Kazerooni in 1995, are a privately owned American curriculum school located in the Juffair area of Bahrain. In addition to the American Curriculum, the school is authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma and Certificate program for students in Grades 11 and 12. The school is approved by the Ministry of Education for the Kingdom of Bahrain, and its program is equivalent to the Bahrain government high school diploma (Tawjihi). The school comes under the supervision of the directorate of Private Education at the Ministry of Education. English is the language of instruction, but Arabic as a first language and Islamic religion and social studies in Arabic are required of Arab passport holders by the Ministry of Education. Non-Arab passport holders are exempt from this curricular requirement. All students in Grades 6 – 12 are required to take at least eight subjects. High School Credits issued are based upon the American Carnagie Unit system: 200 minutes per week for 36 weeks of a 180 day school calendar earns one credit.
