Update Regarding International Baccalaureate Studies 22 March

MKS is in communication with IBO leadership on a regular basis regarding the status of the spread of Corona Virus and its impact on schools in Bahrain and around the world. Please follow the IB Corona Virus FAQ website here for more updates:

The IB will be taking the following actions for the 2020 May Examination session:

  1. The May 2020 examinations as scheduled between 30 April and 22 May for Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme candidates will no longer be held.
  2. Depending on what they registered for, the student will be awarded a Diploma or a Course Certificate which reflects their standard of work. This is based on student’s coursework and the established assessment expertise, rigor and quality control already built into the programmes.

School Closing for Staff18 March

Due to the decision of His Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown
Prince, to avoid gatherings for more than 20 people and to preserve the safety of the members of
the administrative and educational staff, we’ve decided that henceforth teaching and learning will be conducted remotely through the online learning platforms. Staff are encouraged to work from home whenever possible.

MKS community members should note that communication through telephone with school leaders may be disrupted as a result of working from home. Parents, students, and community members are encouraged to reach out to staff via email whenever possible. See the contact page of this website for contact details of each division leader.

Communication with Teachers15 March

Staff members are expected to answer emails from students and parents between the hours of 7 am and 2:15 pm. Of course staff can respond at their personal preference outside of school hours. However, this means if a staff member receives an email at 6 pm or 10 pm, they should not be expected to respond before the next business day. Please be patient with staff members, as they are experiencing a high volume of messages during this time.

Online Lesson Content15 March

All MKS teachers are expected to provide video recorded lessons using Loom, Google Meet, Youtube, or other digital platforms. Lesson content in KG/ES is delivered through Class Dojo. Lesson content in MS/HS is delivered through Google Classroom.

By order of the Ministry of Education, students and parents are not permitted to enter the school campus. If students need books or items from the school campus, they may see security at the gate to retrieve their belongings for them.
All schools have commenced online learning activities. Please reach out to IT staff for technical support via the online support form or to school principals if there is additional help needed.

MKS will continue regular course content online during this national school cancellation

Online Learning Emergency Plan

All schools have been closed in Bahrain as a precautionary method to control the spread of COVID-19 (commonly known as CoronaVirus). Modern Knowledge Schools staff & administration stand in full support of our school community, and we are working diligently to make appropriate plans and arrangements during this time. Please make note of the following:

-Classes will continue in an online format. Teachers have been briefed with strategies and resources to facilitate online learning, and MKS is well-equipped for online learning because of our comprehensive technology education program. (see below for more details).

-This school cancellation is NOT a holiday. We do not expect that students will necessarily be working during the regular timetable periods. However, both teachers and students should be responding to questions and monitoring work regularly. Students who choose to treat the next two weeks as a holiday by not completing assignments, grades will be affected.

-This page will be updated regularly with announcements and further information as we learn more. Check back regularly.

Technology Plan in Kindergarten / Elementary School

We recognize that there will be extreme difficulty in facilitating at-home learning for KG and Elementary level students during a school cancellation. It is, however, possible to encourage positive educational habits at home with parents as an intermediary.

-Class Dojo will be the main platform of communication between teachers, students, and parents. This platform is already the regular standard for communication in the primary levels.

-Teachers will post assignments for students to complete on Class Dojo. We ask for the support of parents in ensuring their children complete work. Take the time to practice and revise with them.

-For students with iPads (grades 3 & 4), we have pushed out apps for math instruction that can be used by students to practice general math concepts. Teachers may share tips with parents on which apps to use.

-Grades and marks will continue to be posted in Plus Portal, as usual.

Technology Plan in Middle School / High School

We are encouraging teachers to put their full effort into crafting high quality educational experiences for their students online- just as they do in your real-world classrooms each day. If we do our due diligence, students can continue to learn at a full capacity despite the present challenges.

G-Suite tools will be utilized by staff to continue delivering course content online in MS & HS:

Google Classroom will be used as the main hub for distributing lesson content, videos, materials, and assignments. Teachers will modify lesson content to function appropriately in an online format.
Assignments will be posted on Classroom as normal.

-Teachers should ensure parents are added as guardians in Classroom to follow up with updates of class materials. Parents, reach out to your child’s teacher if you do not receive parent or guardian summaries from Google Classroom.

-Some teachers may record lesson content or lectures to post in Classroom.

-Teachers will utilize Google Calendars when posting assignments. Students should follow up with their calendars to ensure they are submitting materials by their due dates.

-Teachers will provide students with regular written feedback on assignments through Google Docs comments.

-Teachers should provide clear expectations in written format and rubrics for all projects.
Students may use Hangouts or Gmail to ask questions of their teachers (please try to limit questions to during regular business hours). Video/voice calling is also available on Hangouts Meet for high school students.

-Grades and marks will continue to be posted in Plus Portal, as usual.

Effective Hygiene Practices & Avoidance

Basic COVID-19 Protective Measures

(from the World Health Organization)

COVID-19 is still affecting mostly people in China with some outbreaks in other countries. Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:

Wash your hands frequently

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain social distancing

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider

Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.

Our academic programs provide five major pathways for students. The programs prepare the students for the engineering field, the medical field, the business field, or a liberal arts focus. We also provide an excellent I.B. Program that prepares our students for the university and the future.
